A new method was developed for determining the orientation angle of fibers from attenuation in microwaves based on interaction between polarized microwaves and dipole moments of fibers in paper sheet. The method has characteristics of non-contact and nondestruction, and allows the orientation angle to be determined in such a short time as ca, 60sec, The method was applied to the trouble that the paper was inclined when the paper was folded in a number of layers. A good correlation coefficient of 0.968 was obtained between the degree of inclination in folded paper and the orientation angle determined from attenuation in microwaves. The apparatus based on the present method was shown to be very useful for a quick estimation of the degree of inclination in folded paper for printer.
