Kanzo Uchimura and Shigetaka Shiga were graduated from Sapporo Agricultural School. The former became a faithful Christian and the latter an enemy of its creed, though they were both under the influence of J. C. Cutter,a professor of physiology and English literature. His strong effect upon Uchimura resulted in his effort to harmonize the truth of natural science and the Bible. On the other hand, Shiga was effected literarily so that he tried to seek for new beauty of the nature through science. In consequence, newly found expression of human spirit and the nature had to do with formation of modern literature.
