I think that one of the reasons why Kenji tried the self-sufficient way of living lies in his consideration on the impoverished conditions of the, rural communities caused by the natural disasters and the permeation of the capitalistice conomy. In addition,we can think of another motivation which has something to do with his ideal and creativity in which he gave descriptions in "the Field of the Peasantry Art" in his work "General Considerations on the Peasantry Art." He explained about it as a creation of the practical art, including that of clothes and handcraft, which also meant the harmonization of work and art in the Morris's world. But Kenji himself gave up this attempt on the way, forboding the official oppressions, and by and by changed his attitude until heaccepted the operations of industrial cooporation. This fact evidently shows Kenji's retreat, though he continued his efforts to persue his idealistic world by means of the self-sufficient economy.
