It is necessary to talk about various backgrounds and factors when we discussthe origin and the development of the so called diary literature by female writers. Murasaki Shikibu's Diary, having the characteristic elements of a traditionalcourt lady's diary, differs from the work like Kagero Diary. Court lady's diarieswere written by the women who waited upon the empress or the second consortof an emperor called "chugu", and we can trace back its origin to Taigo Gyoki, the documents of Chugu Onshi. In Murasaki Shikibu's Diary we can recognizethe author's personal impressions more often than the characteristics as a court-lady's diary.
