The incidence of dermatophytoses and dermatophytes in the Imafuku Dermatology Clinic in Nagasaki between 1985 and 1986 was studied. A total of 1,185 patients with dermatophytoses, 10.1% of all the outpatients, was observed. There were 884 patients with tinea pedis, 147 with T. corporis, 78 with T. cruris, 35 with T. unguium and 6 with T. capitis. The species most frequently isolated was T. rubrum (426 strains, 58.2%), followed by T. mentagrophytes (279 strains, 38.1%), M. canis (20 strains, 2.7%), E. floccosum, (4 strains), T. glabrum (2 strains) and 1 strain of T. violaceum. The ratio of T. rubrum to T. mentagrophytes was 1.53 (426/279) in all the tinea patients and 0.93 in the tinea pedis patients.
