This is to report a comparative study between water soluble contrast medium (Dimer X) and oily contrast medium (Myodil) in 34 cases of lumbar discogenic diseases.
1) Dimer-X was superior in 10 cases and inferior in 3 cases compared to Myodil.
2) There were 2 cases of false negative findings in Dimer-X and 3 cases in Myodil.
3) No changes in cerebrospinal fluid was found after each myelography except some increase of the number of cells.
4) Slight complications occurred by both Dimer-X and Myodil. Dimer-X had less root symptomes but no difference was observed in the occurrences of irritation signs of meninges such as headache, fever and nausea. Any other sever complications were not found.
5) Dimer-X is considered to be the first choice. If any doubt, frequent myelography by Dimer-X or Myodil will be necessary.
