This is a follow-up study of the total knee arthroplasties performed in our department on the patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the past ten years. 29 arthroplasties of 20 patients were investigated and assessed. Applied prostheses were 11 Geomedic Arthroplasties, 16 Total Condylar, one Guepar and one Shiers. It seems that great pain relief can be made with total knee arthroplasty regardless of its type.
On the other hand, functional improvement is not so easily achieved, because other joints are usually affected in most of the patients. We could not find any obvious differences between the result of Geomedic knees and that of Total Condylar knees in this survey. There were no severe postoperative complications except one unfortunate case of deep infection.
