Among 38 bacteria tested, (1) Ps. gluconicum oxidized glucose to gluconic acid, (2)- Ps. fluorescens and S. marcescens (B. prodigiosus) oxidized gluconic acid to 2-ketogluconic acid (3) Ps, orbzae, S. marcescens and B. carotovorus oxidized ethanol to acetic acid. Besides them, B. mesentricus produced more than 30% acetoin (acetylmethylcarbinol), but not mannose, as formerly reported, from mannitol.
