Two pyridoxine derivatives were found to be formed when cellobiose and pyridoxine were incubated with wheat bran β-glucosidase (cellobiase). The two derivatives were purified separately from the incubation mixture by a procedure including paper chromatography, Sephadex_??_ G-15 gel filtration, acetylation, deacetylation, and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. One of them was obtained in a crystalline form of its hexaacetate, and the other in a faintly yellowish powder. These derivatives were identified as 4'-(β-glucosyl) pyridoxine and 5'-(β-glucosyl) pyridoxine, respectively, on the basis of the various experimental results, viz., elemental analyses. UV, IR and NMR absorption spectra, electrophoretic mobilities on paper, color reaction with 2, 6-dichloroquinone 4-chlorimide in the presence of boric acid, and hydrolysis with almond β-glucosidase.
