The crude drug Onji is the dried bark of roots from Polygala tenuifolia Willd. The bark from the thick roots and thin roots is called Onji-tsutsu and Onji-niku, respectively. The volatile oils of Onji-tsutsu and Onji-niku were obtained by steam distillation. Based on GC/MS and retention indices, 212 and 209 compounds were characterized from Onji-tsutsu and Onji-niku, respectively. Although components of these oils were almost all the same, some features were different. Especially, carboxylic acids accounted for 49.26% in Onji-tsutsu and 61.50% in Onji-niku. The major common components were from C5 to C9 carboxylic acids, hexanal, E, E-2, 4-deca-dienal, and amyl alcohol. These results suggest that Onji-tsutsu and Onji-niku are different in quality and they can be distinguished by comparing their volatile oils.
