Sonochemical degradation of various types of hazardous organic compounds in water was investigated to understand the reaction mechanism and reaction kinetics where some additives were used to enhance the rates of degradation. On the other hand, various metal nanoparticles were able to be synthesized on the basis of the sonochemical degradation of organic compounds in water. Based on the results obtained in our group, it was suggested that the size and shape of metal nanoparticles are sensitively affected by the rate of sonochemical reduction of metal ions which is closely related to the amounts of chemical species formed form the sonolysis of organic compounds in water. Therefore, for the practical applications of ultrasound to water treatment technology and nanotechnology, it is very important to develop an effective degradation technique of organic compounds during ultrasonic irradiation.
