Silica-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid films were prepared by the sol-gel method from a mixture of polymerized tetraethoxysilane (Si(OC2H5)4) and modified PDMS. The modified PDMS used in this study was monosilanol-both-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HO{Si(CH3)2O}nSi(CH3)2OH), described as diol-type PDMS, or trisilanol-both-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, described as hexaol-type PDMS, which was synthesized from diol-type PDMS and 3-isocyanatepropyltrimethoxysilane (OCN-C3H6Si(OCH3)3). All films were prepared by spin-coating on glass substrates and by firing at 280 °C for 10 min. The sliding angle for 50 mg water droplet of resultant films was very low of about 5° or less when the polymerization degree of the modified PDMS was more than 20. The durability against water washing of the films containing hexaol-type PDMS was much better than that of films containing diol-type PDMS. We think that the hexaol-type PDMS was able to bond to silica matrix more strongly than diol-type PDMS because hexaol-type PDMS had more silanol groups than diol-type PDMS.
