Monodispersed spherical titania particles were synthesized by hydrolysis of titanium alkoxide in a mixed acetonitrile/alcohol solvent and the formation mechanism was investigated. In this system, a phase separation of alkoxide was observed with increasing proportion of acetonitrile of the mixed medium. Monodispersed titania particles were obtained only in a homogeneous system in the presence of ammonia without the phase separation of titanium alkoxide. This may suggest that the liquid - liquid interface of alkoxide and the mixed solvent may act as a nucleation center of titania throughout the formation process. Also, in-situ observation of the formation process of the formation process of titania in an inhomogeneous system with alkoxide droplets revealed that the titania particles were not formed inside the alkoxide droplets.
