BIOMIMETIC SYNTHESYS OF SILICON CARBIDE FROM MAMBOO By Kazunori KIJIMA Kyoto Institute of Technology, Matsugasaki Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, 606-8585,( kijima@ipc.kit.ac.jp )The present study is to prepare SiC with similar microstructure to bamboo structure using bamboo as starting materials. SiC could be obtained by reacting carbonized/graphitized bamboo with silicon at high temperature.Bamboo was heated below than 300oC for charcoal , above 1450oC for siliconization, and below than 2100oC for graphitization. The reaction product was fabricated by infiltrating a silicon melt into the porous bamboo charcoal or graphite.Reaction products were identified with β-SiC and Si by powder XRD and Raman spectroscopy. SEM observation showed that the reaction process transformed the bamboo charcoal to the dense Si/SiC material with a composite structure. By comparison the microstructure of bamboo with that of SiC, the structure was not changed.
