With the rapid development of information and EV technology in recent years, demand for rechargeable lithium batteries with high performance is increasing. Conventional lithium ion batteries use carbonaceous anode materials such as MCMB. The graphite-based anodes, in comparison with metallic lithium and most lithium alloys, have a low reversible capacity. In addition, the insertion potential is so low that a high-rate charging may lead to the risk of lithium deposition on the surface and subsequent dendrite formation. For these reasons, intensive study has been done on new alternative anode materials that mainly include intermetallic compounds, metallic oxides, metal (or silicon)/carbon composites, lithium (transition) metal nitrides and phosphides. The present article summarizes and discusses the recent research and development in this field.
