In this study, we tried to synthesize TiO2 particles by hydrolysis of TiOSO4 and TiOCl2 aqueous solution using a domestic microwave oven. The microwave irradiation was controlled by measurement of temperature in the reaction system using an optical fiber. By microwave-heating method, the precipitation was observed within 2-6min, which was faster than by conventional refluxing method. This result indicates that the hydrolysis of TiOSO4 and TiOCl2 was promoted by microwave irradiation. By X-ray diffraction, the product was identified to be amorphous phase when using TiOSO4 as starting solution, whereas crystalline phases of rutile and/or anatase when using TiOCl2. TiOSO4 formed large roundish particles. On the other hand, the product of TiOCl2 consisted of agglomerates of nanocrystalline phase.
