Preparation of Nano Fe3O4 Powder from Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Nucleation Process

To obtain a well dispersed nano sized Fe3O4 powders of quantity, we have used a modified homogeneous precipitation method. Urea was used as precipiating agent at the early stage of the reaction process. After the pH has rised to a certain value, the ammonia water was suppled exeternally to enhace the nucleation of Fe3O4 without producing the another phase such as Fe(CO3)x. The particle size and its distribution was varied depending on the pH and the amount of urea used. Nano Fe3O4 with a size ranges of 20-100 nm was obtained by magnetic separation and washing process after the aging period at temperature of 80-90oC. The characteistics of the powder were determined by XRD, TEM, BET, ans VSM. Also, some application for this particle is also suggeted.
