Eletcrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a kind of powder forming process in which charged particles in a liquid medium migrate to an electrode under an applied electric field (electrophoresis) and deposit on the electrode to form a thick film. Various applications in the field of ceramics have been reported so far: for example, preparation of a coating layer, a free-standing film, laminated composite materials, fiber reinforced materials, etc. On the other hand, theoretical interpretation of EPD, which is mainly based on colloid chemistry, has not been completely understood, especially in the deposition mechanism. In this review paper, new interpretation of the particle deposition in EPD process including the effect of powder properties, i.e. particle size distribution and packing structure, is proposed.
