Dense mullite ceramics have been fabricated only by fine powders prepared with complex and expensive process such as sol-gel method, because many researchers reported that it was difficult to make dense mullite ceramics from alumina and kaolin. In this study, authors have successfully prepared dense mullite ceramics from alumina and refined kaolin, which contained less impurity. Specimens sintered above 1873 K showed the Young′s modulus of 230 GPa and mean bending strength of 370MPa. Scanning electron micrographs of polished and thermal etched sections showed the submicron grain structures.
