Fluorescence spectra have been measured for rare-earth-doped silicate glasses in the SiO2-CaO-Na2O system. In particular, an attention has been paid to the fluorescence in silicate glasses doped with Tb3+ and Ce3+ under UV excitation. The excitation at 365nm carried out for glasses doped with both Tb3+ and Ce3+ gives rise to the emission ascribed to the 5D4-7F5 transition of Tb3+, although the glasses doped with only Tb3+ do not exhibit the emission when they are irradiated with UV at 365nm. It is ascertained that Ce3+ in the silicate glasses manifests absorption at 365nm. Hence, it is speculated that the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ takes place in the silicate glasses doped with both Tb3+ and Ce3+.
