The linear shrinkages are 0.67 and 6.85 % when the sintering temperatures are in the range of 1223 ~ 1273 K and 1435 ~ 1723 K, respectively, at a heating rate of 5 K min-1. The average pore diameter increases from 0.58 to 1.54 mm when the sintering temperature increases from 1373 to 1873 K. The open porosity decreases from 48.5 to 37.2 % when the sintering temperature increases from 1373 to 1673 K but it increases to 39.6 % as sintered at 1773 K for 1 h. As sintered at 1773 K, the open porosity increases to 41.3 % when the duration increases to 5 h. The mullite phase content increases from 12.0 to 31.1 mass % when the sintering temperature increases from 1373 to 1573 K and then it suddenly increases to 84.9 mass % when the temperature increases to 1873 K. Keywords: pore structure, kaolin, Al2O3, mullite
