Abstract
Kaolinite was organically modified with butanediols by the reaction between methoxy-modified kaolinite and 1,2-(and 1,3-)butanediols. Butanediols were grafted onto the interlayer surface of kaolinite by transesterification of methoxy-modified kaolinite, which was shown by XRD, TG-DTA, and 13C CP/MAS NMR data. During the reaction, the amounts of the alkoxy groups per Al2Si2O5(OH)4 increased. This finding suggests that further esterification of AlOH groups with butanediols also occurred.
