A 62-year-old male with chronic pancreatitis and a habit of constipation admitted to the hospital because of abdominal distension, left lower abdominal pain and melena several hours after sigmoidoscopic examination for his positive fecal occult blood.
Sigmoidoscope revealed irregular ulcer about 3cm in diameter in the rectum, and regenerative epithelium was observed 5 days after conservative management. Acute rectal ulcer was completely healed 4 months later. Pathogenesis of this case could be associated with the increased luminal pressure induced by the preparations or sigmoidoscopic examination, in addition to the habit of constipation.
