In the Northeast Japan which belongs to the monsoon region of northern temperate zone, brown forest soils have been treated as a zonal soil, but they possess a feature that is easily podzolized. And, podzolized soils are acutually distributed above sub-alpine zone. Therefore, the writer believes that the vertical zonality is recognized in the distribution of brown forest soils and podzolized soils at the mountainous region of the Northeast Japan. These soils are classified, on the basis of the mode of occurrence and soil genesis, into the following soil types; [table] Moreover, he has an opinion that we can find the following distribution pattern in the Northeast Japan; 1) In the far north part (the Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas) Podzolized brown forest soils are distributed. 2) In the eastern part (the Kitakami and Abukuma Plateaus) Black soils (Ando soils) are distributed. 3) In the western part (the Dewa Hill and the Echigo Range) Surface-gleyed brown forest soils and Wet iron podzols (Molken podzol) are distributed.
