Abstract

Lucid dreaming is defined as achieving conscious awareness of dreaming while still asleep. Lucid dreaming can manipulate scripts and is known as a non-pharmacological treatment for nightmares caused by psychological stress. This study examined the relationship between the type of lucid dreaming (self-awareness and script control), Big Five, and stress coping styles using a web-based survey of 647 Chinese university students. Our results indicated that neuroticism and problem-focused stress coping were positively related to the self-awareness of lucid dreaming. In contrast, openness and avoidance-escape stress coping were positively related to lucid dreaming with script control.
