The purpose of product family analysis is to find an appropriate balance between the mix of variants in a product family and the need for reconfiguration and new investments in the manufacturing system. An important aspect of product family analysis is to understand the impact on a manufacturing system when new product functionality is introduced, or when existing functionality is changed. Consequently, it is necessary to understand the relationship between product functionality and manufacturing system capability. This paper presents a UML-model (class model) that represents manufacturing system capability and links it to the functionality of a product.
