In our previous study, a new centerless grinding method using surface grinder was proposed. By this new method, centerless grinding operations can be performed by installing a compact centerless grinding unit on the worktable of a surface grinder. The unit consists mainly of an ultrasonic elliptic-vibration shoe, a blade and their respective holders. During grinding, the cylindrical workpiece is held on the ultrasonic shoe and the blade, and its rotational motion is controlled by the elliptic motion of the shoe end-face. In this paper, the performance of the grinding unit in in-feed centerless grinding operation process was conformed, and the effects of the process parameters, such as the workpiece center eccentric angle, the grinding wheel feed rate, the grinding allowance and the workpiece rotational speed, on the workpiece roundness were investigated experimentally. The obtained results indicate that (1) the optimal eccentric angle is 6-; (2) better workpiece roundness can be obtained under a lower grinding wheel feed rate, a larger grinding allowance and a higher workpiece rotational speed.
