Abstract

The purpose of this survey was to grasp the distribution of land covers around the channels which start at oblique weirs. Both field works and map analyses of 10 historical channels in Japan uncovered the following facts. Paddy fields dominated the areas of river side of the channels, while forests dominated the areas of mountain side of the channels. Therefore, it was thought that the way of land use in conformity with topography could be observed around the channels. On the other hand, accumulation of residential lots was recognized in the river sides of some channels. It became clear that the original landscape had been alternating due to urbanization.
