In England, some authorities have a local disignation "Areas of special local character(ASLC)" to manage their local historic environment. This study clarifies how many councils have ASLC in Greater London(GL) and how to disignate ASLC by reading home pages, mailng to all councils and interviews. As a result of this research, 14 out of 33 councils have ASLC in GL. The subject of ASLC are mainly residential area. Maximum disignated number is 39, and minimum disignated number is 1. It takes about 3 to 6 months to to investigate the district, consulte disignated ,areas, hear opinions to residents, etc. After the disignation, some councils reevaluates the the areas. After that, important districts can be upgladed to conservation areas. In addition, demolished districts can be canceled disignation.
