Abstract

In Tokyo, the development of high rise buildings are showing a trend of clustering to particular districts. Therefore, the cumulative impacts on urban environment should be measured in addition to the individual impact to address the actual impact caused by the combination of multiple developments. However, the current environmental impact assessment (EIA) system in Japan only evaluates the impact of individual developments, which may lead to the underestimation of the cumulative impacts of the multiple buildings. In this research, we have measured or accumulated the cumulative environmental impacts of the clustered multiple high-rise developments located near Musashi-Kosugi Station in the City of Kawasaki. We have made clear that the current EIA system needs to be improved be able to measure the cumulative impacts and to streamline the procedures for future development elsewhere. This research should help improve the current EIA system
