Abstract

This study focuses on the Uraga area in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and captures the actual situation of community activities related to the preservation and utilization of the Uraga Dock, after organizing the process of community formation centered on the shipyard. In the Uraga area, the region has been formed as a base for “sea defense,” “distribution,” and “shipbuilding” because of its location at the mouth of Tokyo Bay. Today, efforts for “regional development and tourism” are being developed by reevaluating various industrial heritage sites. Efforts related to the preservation and utilization of the Uraga Dock have been developed in the context of the shipbuilding area through the implementation of activities by the government, companies, and professional organizations that take advantage of their respective characteristics.
