Abstract

More and more CCTVs (closed-circuit televisions) are installed in public places by the private sector. This paper shows that citizens' attitude varies according to the installer and the place installed with a questionnaire answered by 2,827 citizens all over Japan. The rate of answerers who are opposed to CCTVs on neighborhood streets is four times as much as that on downtowns. The rate of answerers who are opposed to CCTVs installed by private persons is more than that by the public sector (municipalities or the police). It can be said more dispute is needed as to the pluses and minuses of CCTVs installed especially in neighborhoods by private persons.
