Abstract

European Landscape Convention (ELC) is a first international legal instrument exclusively devoted to Landscape matters and since its adoption on 2000, 30 countries ratified and 7 countries signed in the Council of Europe's member states. The aims of this convention are to realize the role and values of European Landscape as a common heritage and to protect, management and planning of these Landscapes. In 2008, National Land Use Planning in Japan introduced the word of Landscape as a important concept to determine Beauty of National Territory. Although the word originally came from the European Landscape Convention, in Japan, only a few papers introduced and analyzed the contents and meaning of ELC, which is including author's recent paper. Then, this paper is attempted to analyze the social significance and definition of a Landscape of the ELC. After that a few suggestions about National Land Use Planning in Japan are delivered.
