The purpose of this article is to examine how Bataille’s essays trace the quality of persistence as an essential attribute of Sade’s idea of transgression. Both in Sade’s pornographic novels and the author’s voluptuous life Bataille observes a consistent intervention of rationality, claiming that Sade’s transgression is not merely a means of satisfying his desire but also an occasion to understand violence and desire through the use of rational frameworks such as language and calculation. Such rational understanding of passionate feelings enables Sade to give his idea of transgression a persistent and rational character. Once violence, which is intrinsically transient, gains the persistent character, it will become a prolonged, pure exercise without specific objectives. The rational understanding of violence, as Bataille claims, opens up the possibility of expanding the sphere of one’s self-consciousness.
