This article treats the portraits of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (b. 1552; 1576-1612) by classifying them into three types. First, a beautiful image of the new emperor succeeding the authority of the ancient Roman Empire, which is an invention of the medalist Antonio Abondio. Second, a strong image of the emperor defeating the Turks and bringing peace to the empire, created primarily by the engraver Aegidius Sadeler and the sculptor Adriaen de Vries. Third, a magical image derived from the idea of the golden age and of natural magic, as represented by Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Vertumnus. The portraits' interpretation along this classification shows their specific effects: namely, Rudolf’s transfiguration on the portraits as a process of making him not human but “the emperor Rudolf.”
