Shape memory polymer (SMP) can be deformed from its original permanent shape to a temporary shape, can be fixed at the temporary shape, and can recover to the original shape spontaneously by an external stimulus such as heating. In order to reveal the shape memory ability, SMP is necessary to possess (1) crosslinked network structure to memorize its permanent shape, and (2) reversible solidification-softening transition component in order to be deformed to a temporary shape at softening state and to fix the temporary shape at solidification state. The characteristics of SMP are governed by polymer’s basic properties such as rheological and thermal properties. In this paper, mechanism and molecular design concept for shape memory properties will be described, with our research results on SMP.
