Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the calf circumference cut-off value for identifying severe sarcopenia among community-dwelling older women undergoing outpatient rehabilitation.

Methods: This study included 114 older women undergoing outpatient rehabilitation. The outcomes measured were severe sarcopenia and calf circumference. Logistic regression analysis was conducted, with severe sarcopenia as the dependent variable and calf circumference, body mass index, Food Intake Level Scale, appetite loss, and propensity score (calculated from age, number of medications, and revised Charlson Comorbidity Index) as independent variables. Additionally, the calf circumference cut-off value for detecting severe sarcopenia was determined.

Results: Of the 114 participants, 54 had severe sarcopenia. Logistic regression analysis revealed that only calf circumference (odds ratio=0.673) was a significant predictor of severe sarcopenia. The calf circumference cut-off value for identifying severe sarcopenia was 31.5 cm, with a sensitivity of 71.7%, a specificity of 75.9%, and an area under the curve of 0.807.

Conclusion: A calf circumference of 31.5 cm serves as a useful cut-off value for identifying severe sarcopenia in community-dwelling older women undergoing outpatient rehabilitation.
