A 43-year-old woman with Sjögren syndrome who showed marked bleeding tendency and renal tubular acidosis was reported. When she was 42 year-old she complained of anorexia, weight loss, and dryness of mouth and eyes.
At 43 years of age she had hypermenorrhea, nasal bleeding, tarry stool and petechiae of upper and lower extremities for one month. Laboratory studies revealed strongly positive Rumpel-Leede test, positive direct Coombs test, hypergammaglobulinemia, positive rheumatoid factor, low complement titer (CH50) and serum hyperviscosity.
Coagulation tests revealed platelet count below 104 per cu. mm. and the decreased platelet aggregation and platelet adhesiveness but other data of coagulation system, fibrinolysis system and coagulatory fibrinolysis inhibitory function were normal.
She was complicated by renal tubular acidosis and drug allergy.
She was treated with prednisolone and the symptoms and laboratory data markedly improved.
