Thiophenicol, a newly synthesized homologue of Chloramphenicol, is more outstanding in effectiveness than Chloramphenicol, and is highly recommended for the treatment of infection in urinary tract and bile duct.
It is also well known that Chloramphenicol is a hematotoxic agent and occasionally it leads to fatal, so that for the clinical usuage of Thiophenicol its toxity was studied whether it has the similar side effect.
Daily dosage of 0.5 to 3 g of Thiophenicol (in most cases 1 to 2 g per day) was given to 33 cases with various diseases for 3 to 106 days and their peripheral blood, bone marrow and serum iron were examined. Results are as follows:
1) 20 of 33 cases showed some changes in blood study which were, however, within normal limits in 17 cases, and returned almost to the initial levels after discontinuing the treatment.
2) It was thus concluded that it had no hematotoxic effect at least in the doses of 1 to 2 g per day for 1 to 2 weeks, though occasional blood examination was required when patients were given this drug for over several weeks.
3) The administration should be stopped immediately when marked anemia or leucopenia were recognized.
4) It was contraindicated to cases with obvious primary or secondary anemia or leucopenia.
