This paper aims to present a realistic picture of the subsistence farming, forestry, and product sharing activities of rural residents in a contemporary mountainous village in Japan. Most Japanese mountainous villages have faced rapid aging and depopulation, which have resulted in the decline of their agricultural and forestry industries. The researchers conducted interviews and a questionnaire survey among the residents of Tenryu Village in Nagano Prefecture. The results show that most residents continue farming and forestry work not for market but to provide free gifts for their children living separately and in other areas. Such sharing of agricultural and forest products constitutes an important factor in maintaining the motivation of rural residents to continue subsistence farming and forestry.
