Since 1953 we have analyzed the protein in the cerebrospinal fluid in thirty-six cases of both normal men and neurosurgical patients. A Tiselius apparatus manufactured by Hitachi & Co. and a paperelectrophoresis apparatus planned by the authors were used.
Concentration of fluid was done by means of Mies' ultrafiltration method.
The results obtained are as follows:
1) V-fraction can be detected in every case, and τ-fraction is shown in all except three cases.
2) In all of the five cases there is a remarkable difference of fractions between the ventricular and spinal fluid taken from the same individual. In the ventricular fluid the fractions of albumin and γ-globulin are less and the other fractions are on the contrary found in greater quantity than in the spinal fluid.
3) In the cases of supratentorial tumors the fractions of albumin and γ-globulin of spinal fluid are much more increased than in other cases and the other fractions are rather decreased. In the cases of cerebellar tumors the ventricular fluid shows increased β-globulin and decreased albumin fraction, forming a contrast to those in the supratentorial tumors.
4) In the cases of hydrocephalus, an increase of V-fraction and albumin are noticed in the spinal fluid.
5) In the cases of meningitis and syphilis, a decrease of albumin and an increase of γ-globulin are detected.
6) In the cases of schizophrenia, epilepsy and obsolete brain contusion the fractions show no remarkable difference from the normal.
7) In all cases in which Pandy's reaction is positive, an increase of γ-globulin is detected.
