Abstract
As a preliminary study for this paper, the author comprehensively studied articles related to Western music in Kyushu Nichi Nichi Shimbun (first published in 1888) of the Meiji era. As a result, the actual state of music education in schools was clarified. In particular, it was found that the activities of music teachers who worked at normal schools and girls' high schools were particularly diverse. In addition to music education at school, they performed at concerts, wrote music textbooks, wrote and composed songs, and provided music classes to elementary school teachers in the prefecture. In other words, their activities can be regarded as contributions to the improvement of education and culture in the prefecture. The music teachers worked at Kumamoto Normal School, Kumamoto Girls' High School, and Shokei Girls' High School, and it was also found that teachers from the three schools were active not only alone but together as well. This paper specifically mentions Koichi Takahama, Kojiro Irie, Kyukei Indo( Nobuzo), Kurami Narita, and Kumajiro Nagahashi.
