There are many reports on foods containing indigestible dextrin, which is effective in the suppression of postprandial glucose level [1-3]. In order to evaluate the safety of the product (test meal name: CD-1), an 8g portion of the product [89% indigestible dextrin, 6% Coix seed (Coix lacrima-jobi L. var ma-yuen Stapf) and 5% horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.)] suspended in 200mL of water was given to 24 volunteers (13 males and 11 females) once daily for 12 weeks (successive intake) and to 29 volunteers (14 males and 15 females) three times a day for 4 weeks (excessive intake). Volunteers in the successive intake group underwent a physical examination and blood and urine tests before-the study, at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks during the study, and 2 weeks after the end of the study; the volunteers in the excessive intake group also underwent a physical examination and blood and urine tests before the study, at 2 weeks and 4 weeks during the study, and 2 weeks after the end of the study. The examinations and tests were carried out during hospital visits. The results of the physical examinations and blood, and urine tests were statistically analyzed by multiple comparison test (Bonferroni/Dunn). A significant difference in blood calcium content was observed between different timepoints in the successive intake group, but was within the normal range, and no other significant differences were observed. The adverse events reported during the study were close to negligible and resolved themselves within a few days; no causal relation with the product was observed. As a result of the safety study, it is concluded that the product is safe in successive intake for three months and excessive intake three times a day for one month.
