This paper identifies the potential impact of China's entry to the WTO on the global automobile industry. For this purpose, the recent history of the Chinese automobile industry is highlighted and its possible evolutionary paths after accession to the WTO are assessed. Several future evolutions are feasible. However, evidence implies that China is about to develop a strong domestic automobile industry by using foreign expertise. This evolution has several effects on the global car industry, leading to reduced GDP and employment in developed markets, a global downward price spiral and globally dominant Chinese automobile manufacturers.
