The present vegetation of the Soya Hills, northern Hokkaido, is characterized by a widespread grassland dominated by Sasa community. Forests which formerly existed in this treeless area were destroyed by fires and logging. In the Sasa grassland, many wood remains are buried beneath the litter layer. In order to reconstruct the original forests in this area, wood remains were identified on the basis of wood anatomical characteristics. One hundred thirty-two specimens obtained from 9 plots were identified and were classified into 8 taxa. Abies is the most common tree species, occupying about 50% of the total. Before the formation of the Sasa grassland, there existed forests composed of Abies, Picea, and Quercus sect. Prinus species with a height of more than 10m.
