Methanol synthesis via direct hydrogenation of CO2 is a key reaction, towards a future based on sustainability and responsible use of fossil materials. Numerous experimental and theoretical studies have been performed on Cu-based catalysts, such as Cu/ZnO and Cu/ZrO2. However the structure of active sites as well as size/morphology/oxidation state of Cu particles in the Cu-based catalysts remains elusive. In this study, Cu nanoparticles on SiO2 and ZrO2 were prepared, and the effect of support materials on CO2 hydrogenation over Cu-based catalysts was investigated.
