Friction and wear properties of self-lubricating chromium plating based on an organic sulfonic acid bath were investigated. The chromium plating film produced using the organic sulfonic acid bath has fine cracks: about five times as many as the plating film from the Sargent bath. Its hardness after heat treatment at 200 ℃ is also high: approximately 900 HV0.2. Furthermore, the F/Cr atomic ratio, which is a rough guide to the amount of PTFE resin adhering to the surface, is high: approx. 3-4. The self-lubricating chromium plating films based on the organic sulfonic acid bath exhibit a stable low coefficient of friction under a load of 4.9 N at a ball-on-plate friction test with a 10 mm diameter Al2O3 ball. It remains below 0.2 after 10,000 sliding cycles. The self-lubricating chromium plating films based on the organic sulfonic acid bath not only maintain the low friction coefficient, but also have low aggression towards the mating material, even under high loads. The films also have excellent wear resistance.
