19th century cast iron stoves remaining in Germany and Austria were investigated. By 1860, the stoves were either equiped with heat storage material such as ceremics, or the construction was designed in such a way that the exhaust fumes were retained inside the stoves for a prolonged time, in order to improve the heating efficiency of the stoves. These heating equipments were widely used until the emergence of steam or hot water heating systems using circulation pumps and room radiators. Today the wood fired stoves are re-emerging due to its potential to replace the use of fossil fuels with biomass, such as wood chips and pellets.
