In order to throw light upon the mechanism of activation of sphalerite in flotation, electron diffraction investigations of the actions of a variety of aqueous heavy metal salts on sphalerite and galena cleavage faces were carried out. The obtained results were compared. with the simple prevailing theory, which is based on solubility relation between metal sulphides and on metathetical reaction between mineral and solution. It was shown that the simple theory is not always tenable. In addition, the action of KEX on the sphalerite and galena cleavage faces pre-conditioned by heavy metal salts was also studied.
