This paper deals with the rheological behaviour of rocks under the pulsating compressive stress. Thestress-strain hysteresis loops under the action of sinusoidal compressive stress, the frequencies ofwhich range from 0.18rpm to 300rpm, are observed with the cathode ray oscilloscope, and classified into three different type, i. e.
(i) linear type, or perfectly elastic body, the rheological behaviour of which would be represented by a spring.
(ii) elliptical type, or linear visco-elastic body, the rheological behaviour of which would be represented by a combination of spring and dash-pot.
(iii) crescent type, or non-linear visco-elastic body, the rheological behaviour of which could not be represented by any combinations of spring and dash-pot.
For the elliptical type of stress-strain hysteresis loops, the dynamic elastic modulus and the dynamic loss are calculated with respect to each value of the frequency of loading.
